It's a very frustrating start to your holiday - you stand waiting at the luggage collection point only for it not to arrive. Frustratingly, even with luggage tracking systems delays and losses are fairly common.
In addition, some passenger's luggage can suffer from delays or damage which is also very inconvenient.
Here we give some advice on how you can try and make tracking your luggage a bit easier, and also give unofficial information regarding what the airline does in terms of reimbursing you.

Lost Luggage - what you need to do ... |

| |
The British Airports Authority (BAA) strictly states that each individual airline carrying a passenger's luggage is responsible for both the security and management of your baggage.
In the first instance, should your luggage appear to be lost in transit it is essential you report your luggage as lost to the lost baggage desk at the airport. |

- Report your lost luggage to the Lost Baggage desk immediately at the airport.

| You'll need to give a description of your luggage, you'll then be given a reference number so that you can monitor the progress of your lost luggage by either phone or online. |
| |
You may also be asked to provide a list of the contents of your lost/delayed baggage and you could even be required to provide original receipts for these items.
Your airline is then acting as if it where an insurance company, and like insurance companies they will then offer you a compensation that is unlikely to match your claim in full. |

| Many airlines don't actually declare your luggage as officially lost until it's been missing for a specified amount of time - in many instances this is after 21 days, British Airways for example. |
| |
After the 21 days you may then be entitled to claim for compensation from your airline.
Many airlines are obliged by the Montreal Convention to pay its customers approx. £800 per person in compensation for their lost luggage. |

| It's worth taking note that many airlines try and persade their passengers to claim for their lost luggage via their travel insurance, however many travel insurance policies don't cover valuables that are stowed in the hold of the aircraft. |
| |
| However, if your travel insurance company does cover you for lost luggage in the hold they will most probably claim it back from the airline anyway. |

| Connecting Flights |
| |
If your lost luggage has happened as a result of you changing flights throughout your journey you can claim against any of the airlines that carried it.
Although beware that the airlines involved will all try and blame each other airline and refuse to handle the claim. If they do this they are in breach of the Montreal Convention. |

| Limited Release Tags |
| |
Certain items of luggage will be given a Limited Release Tag (LRT) at check-in - i.e. sporting equipment, musical instruments, or prams and buggies.
Be warned that this LRT is intended to remove liability from the airline should it be damaged and you could find that the airline refuses your claim. However, if an airline accepts any item as checked in baggage it must accept liability for it as set out in the Montreal Convention. |

| As set out by the Montreal Convention, a passenger's luggage is termed as 'delayed' for a period of 21 days after it is reported as missing. |
|
| |
|
| |
Some airline, or delayed baggage, offer passengers an immediate one-off payment to cover any emergency purchases.
Others pay a set amount per day up to a maximum number of days.
Other airline won't make any
payments straight away and will wait until you have bought your essential items so they can have the receipt to reimburse you.
Regardless, the airline must provide you with a means to cover essential costs resulting from the delay baggage. |

| Once your bags have not been found and the 21 days passes they are officially deemed as lost and you can then proceed to making arrangements to claim for compensation. |

|
Manchester Damaged Baggage... |

|
| |
For damaged baggage you'll find that most airlines will make a payment based on the value of the damaged baggage and any of its contents that is damaged also.
Original receipts many be asked for, and a scale of depreciation will be applied to the value claim.
If just the suitcase is damaged, and not any of the contents,
then in most cases you'll simply be offered a replacement from their store cupboard. |

Manchester Stolen or Lost Luggage ... |

It's is very difficult to prove, and therefore claim, for any compensation for individual items stored and therefore lost in your luggage, or items that have been stolen from you luggage.
It's therefore worth buying the most high quality luggage you can. Also do not put valuables in any baggage that will be checked into the hold. And of course always fly with travel insurance.
A great number of airlines have a clause in their terms and conditions stating that responsibility is not accepted for any valuable or perishable contents such as jewellery, camcorders, cameras, mobile phones or documents.
Although you could argue that is not in line with the Montreal Convention - remember though that airlines are only liable for items that it has agreed to carry in the first place.
Therefore, if you've packed items in your luggage that are clearly listed as “items unacceptable as baggage” you won't be able to claim against the airline if they go missing! |

| Whilst you have no real control on whether your luggage gets lost, delayed or stolen it's always worth taking preventative measures where you can: |
| |
- Make a list of everything you've packed so it can be used as an inventory just in case your bags are lost
- Put your name and address on a piece of paper inside your case should the luggage label on the outside fall off
