Shopping tax free is as if the Value Added Tax - currently at 17.5% - has been deducted, giving you a big saving. Both prices, before and after tax, are displayed on the sales ticket.
In some cases passengers will need to pay tax on their goods if their final destination is outside of the EU. Or when bringing goods back. Certain products like goods from newsagents, book shops and pharmacies, as well as goods with duty already paid are excluded.
If you are not travelling to the below countries, that are currently in the European Union, goods are also duty free, making them even cheaper. |

UK Airport Customs Allowances ... |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Tax and duty free allowances differ depending on your final destination:
If travelling into the UK from the EU you can bring these items without paying additional customs duty:
- 50g of perfume and 250ml of toilet water
- 1 Litre of alcoholic beverages stronger than 22%, or 2 Litres of still table wine, or fortified or sparkling wine, or other liqueurs
- 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco
- Other goods including souvenirs up to the value of £145
- Goods obtained duty and tax paid in the EU are unlimited
Again, the Channel Islands are considered as being outside of the EU for duty free purposes.
If you've already paid tax on items that you are bringing in to any EU country no additional tax or duty will have to be paid. But any alcohol or tobacco must be held by the passengers and must be for their own consumption (or for gifts). Regardless of the type of goods, that have been bought for resale, or for payment of any kind, goods will be considered as for a commercial use.
If Customs have any reason at all to believe that your goods are being brought in for commercial use, Customs Officers will make several checks into your goods, and ask you a number of detailed questions.
For example - why have the goods been bought? Why the quantity? What is your usual consumption of said goods? How much was paid? How often do you travel? And anything else considered relevant to the inquiry.
Consideration will also be given if the consignment looks as if it has been concealed or hidden, or if on obvious, visible display.
For example, the following will be treated as suspicious by Customs Officers:
- 3kg tobacco
- 3,200 cigarettes
- 400 cigarillos
- 200 cigars
- 90 Litres of wine1
- 20 Litres of fortified wine (i.e. port or sherry)
- 10 Litres of spirits
- 10 Litres of beer
If it is decided that the goods are for commercial use the goods will be seized and not returned. Also, if persons are caught selling tobacco or alcohol, the goods will be seized. Both are considered a serious offence and persons found guilty could face up to seven years in prison.
Many countries have their own laws on importation of alcohol and tobacco so do check. Some also require you to carry documentation covering the items. If you are considering purchasing large quantities of any goods it is best to check with the country you are travelling to, in advance.
Be advised that some EU Countries have their own regulations for cigarettes and some tobacco products: |
